A friend told me about Fish King in Glendale. She liked the grilled fish she got. So, I decided to give them a try! Fish King has three sections to the store/restaurant. You walk into the fish market- you can get fresh seafood- to the left is their sushi department. They make fresh sushi and rolls. To the right is the galley- where you can get fried or grilled seafood.
There are tables at the sushi and galley. It's a casual setup, with the food served in paper boats, and paper plates.
Calm chowder bowl- $5.95- Very thin and runny. A decent amount of clams and potatoes. There is no bacon in this clam chowder. They could thicken the chowder and add a bit more seasoning. A small portion for a bowl!
Crunch Jumbo shrimp- $3.25. The thick batter is the same as the fish and crab cakes. This was about 75% shrimp and 25% batter. Along with the other fried items I ordered, they weren't fried to order. They were cooked and sitting under heat lamps.
Crunch fried fish-$3.95- The fish used is cod. But, this also lacked seasoning and the batter was too thick for the amount of cod. I'm guessing 65% fish and 35% batter.
Half order crab cakes- $5.50- I've never had deep fried, I was expecting all batter, but there was a good amount of crab mixture. This wasn't all crab, but a good amount of crab, not jumbo lump but claw meat.
Service was very unfriendly! The lady who took my order never smiled and had a mean look on her face the entire time. Not very welcoming. I was shocked when she politely answered my questions. The food arrived in a good amount of time.
I may go back to King Fish to try their grilled fish and sushi. I wasn't impressed with any of their fried seafood items.
The New Diner 2 is the continuation of the original The New Diner. The New Diner 2 will have the same attitude and same reviews. Comments and suggestions are welcomed, just Email me!

Plaza Fish Market
Plaza Fish Market
3282 W Slauson Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90043

With the tragic shooting death of rapper Nipsey Hussle, I went down to his clothing store to pay tribute. I planned to go Off Da Hook Fish House, which replaced, the now closed, The Fish House, but I found out that Off Da Hook is closed too. I don't eat meat anymore, so I couldn't go to Woody's BBQ. But, luckily I found Plaza Fish Market. It's on the Ralph's shopping center on the southeast corner of Crenshaw and Slauson-where the new Metrorail Crenshaw line Slauson station will open up in 2020.
Plaza Fish Market is another "You buy. We fry." place. They have a big selection of fish-everything from sole, to red snapper to catfish. It's a to-go location, as there is no seating inside.
Lunch special shrimp combo- 4 medium shrimp, 2 pieces of dover sole fish, hush puppies, and fries-$8.50. This was a ton of food. The shrimp was very good. Well fresh in a cornmeal batter. One of the pieces of the sole was too mushy and soggy. The other was good-with a good crunch and flavor. There were a ton of fries.
Service was good.
I would go back to Plaza Fish Market, but wouldn't order dover sole. I should have gotten the red snapper!

Honeybird
Honeybird

Honeybird is another competitor to the fried chicken scene in the LA area. Howlin Ray's is the most popular with very long lines for their chicken. Matter of fact, David Allen wrote about his long wait at Howlin' Ray's! But, even though in 2017 I ate chicken about 10 times, about 1.5%, I missed out on Honeybird. But, I saw their menu and noticed a fried fish sandwich and a shrimp po'boy.
Located on a very busy stretch of Foothill Blvd., Honeybird is a big restaurant. There is a parking lot behind the store, but I got lucky and found parking on Foothill. As you enter from the front, there are tables to your left, and counter with some of their pies displayed.
I got there are Happy Hour, 3-5pm Tues-Fri. Half off the fish sandwich and $1 off all sides. All orders are cooked to order, so expect a wait!
PHIL LEE O FISH $10.25 Crispy Whitefish, Lemon Dill Aioli, Homemade Pickles, Tomato, Cabbage. Happy hour price is $5. The fish I'm pretty sure is swali or catfish. The guy didn't even know. He did say it was farmed. The fish was well cooked, very crispy and good. But, the sandwich just didn't come together because the bun could not hold up the all the toppings, it just became a mushy mess.
Service was good. Nice and friendly, but I would like them to know what kind of fish they use for their fish sandwich.
I may come back and try the shrimp po'boy and the fried chicken, but I'm glad I didn't pay full price for the fish sandwich.
