Naked Fish

Naked Fish
14720 Pipeline Ave Ste A
Chino Hills, CA 91709
909-680-9005

Naked Fish is next door to, the now closed 1 + 1 Dumpling, and next to Roscoe's Famous Deli.  This space used to be Mes Amis, a Mediterranean restaurant, that was very pricey.  It's a small restaurant with tables along the edge of the restaurant and the sushi bar to the left as you enter.  It's a nice warm inviting place.

Crunchy Giants-$10.99- shrimp tempura roll topped with snow crab and crunchy flakes.  It's not snow snow on top.  It's the imitation crab you usually get with California rolls.  This was ok,the top would just come off when you dipped it into the soy sauce and the shrimp tempura was overcooked, very chewy!

Spicy tuna hand roll-$3.99 and shrimp tempura roll-$5.99.  The spicy tuna hand roll was huge!  Lots of good fresh spicy tuna.  The shrimp tempura roll was good, better than the shrimp tempura roll on the crunchy giants roll, but they put too much of a sweet sauce!!

California roll-$4.99.  Good, fresh, but they need to stop advertising this as snow crab.  This is imitation crab!

I ordered the nigri suhi-regular tuna $4.99 and shrimp $4.99.  They list nigri sushi by their Japanese name. Maguro for tuna and ebi for shrimp. But, I forgot to take a picture.  The shrimp was good.  But the tuna didn't take fresh at all.

Service is good.

Naked Fish is pretty good.  Not outstanding or a must try.  I won't rush back, but wouldn't object to going back.

Oke Poke

Oke Poke
3277 Grand Ave
Chino Hills, CA 91709
909-548-7887

In the same shopping center as Happy Kitchen, Oke Poke is my first time having real poke. A fast casual restaurant with tables as you walk in and the counter at the back of the building.

Three scoop bowl-$8.99. Ahi tuna, shrimp, spicy tuna.  Base-half spring mix veggies and brown rice with crab. Veggies-corn, edmame, cucumbers, carrots, and green onions.  This was light, fresh, and well balanced.  But, then again it was what I made of it.  I was happy with this poke.  It is certain less expensive than sushi, but I miss the seaweed!

Service was good.  The guy was helpful and patient explaining the way to order poke.

I'm not completely sold on poke, but I would go back to Oke.

Fatburger-Closed

Fatburger
8790 Central Ave
Montclair, CA 91763
909-920-4417

Fatburger was a popular burger chain back in the 1980's.  After some ownership changes, including Magic Johnson, Fatburger is trying to make a comeback in a very crowded burger market.  Not only is iconic In N Out still the top burger chain in the LA area, but carpetbaggers like Five Guys, have come into the market.

I wanted to try Fatburger because they have the Impossible Burger!  I'm not a big fan of the Impossible Burger, mainly because of their false marketing that does not tell the consumer that it is a GMO product!!  I've tried the Impossible Burger at Umami in Anaheim, and Tony Dart's Away.  I wasn't overly impressed with the taste from either one, but like Tony's better.

Impossible burger, $8.99. All burgers at Fatburger come with mayo, lettuce, onions, relish, mustard, pickles, and tomatoes.  I asked for no onions.  The burgers are made to order, so expect a wait.  This was very good.  A no frills burger.  The pattie was a little too chard and salty, but otherwise a good way to make the impossible burger.

Service was good.

I would go back to Fatburger for the Impossible burger!  This is the best way a restaurant has made the Impossible burger!

Happy Veggie Garden-Closed

Happy Veggie Garden
1015 S Nogales St Ste 127
Rowland Heights, CA 91748
626-810-2298

Happy Veggie Garden is located in the 99 Ranch Market shopping center!  It's a good sized restaurant with booths and tables in the middle of the restaurant.

They have an all you can eat special for $16.99.  So, it's a great deal to try different dishes.  They have rules, like no take out, and at least two people.  Portion size is good enough to share for two people.

Fried rice with tofu, carrots, and peas. No soy sauce, so it made this kind of bland.  Almost like eating white rice with some small pieces of tofu with carrots and peas mixed in.  Better than just plain white rice.
Shrimp and tofu with broccoli, mushrooms, snow peas, carrots.  There were only two pieces of soy shrimp, but this veggies and sauce were outstanding!!  Very good flavor and just the veggies were cooked perfectly!!  I'm sure the regular dish comes with more soy shrimp.

Sweet and sour chicken- the chicken is mushrooms deep fried in a batter.  The sauce is more like orange chicken sauce, than sweet and sour.  But, a very good dish and there were plenty of chicken.

Fried noodles-More flavor than the fried rice.  Good dish and good portion size.

Kung pao shrimp-Way too much zucchini, about six pieces of soy shrimp. Good flavor, but I wish they would use other veggies!

Sauteed corn- You've had creamed corn?  Well, this is basically the sauteed corn.  Good flavor, not overly sweet and the corn was cooked pefectly.

Service was good.  But, it took awhile for the first couple dishes to come out.  The dishes later that we ordered later on, came out quickly.

Overall I was impressed with the selection, quality and flavor of the all you can eat menu.  I will be back to try some of the other dishes on the menu.

Flo’s No 2

Flo’s No 2
5650 Riverside Dr
Chino, CA 91710
909-628-0818

I found out about Flo’s No 2 when David Allen talked about the home made pies at Flo's Cafe near the Chino Airport.  Flo's has three locations, including two with a few miles of each other.

Since today is Pie Day, 3-14, I figured I would give Flo's Cafe a try.  I went to Flo's Cafe first and something just seemed off.  The young man who helped me was nice but I wanted a couple slices of pie and while there were some whole pies, he said he couldn't cut them.  He also said all slices were $3.50, when the David Allen's story said the pie of the month was $1.75.  Anyways I just passed and figured I was go to  Mariscos El Puerto. But, on my way there I passed by Flo's No 2 and I decided to give them a try.  And yes, get a slice of pie!

Flo's No 2 is a stand alone restaurant, with a counter to the right as you enter and tons of tables straight ahead.  A nice warm, cozy place.  The sign says this location opened in 1986!

Fish and chips, $7.45.  Fish was cod and they were frozen.  But the fish to batter ratio was about 70 to 30, which is pretty good.  Not overwhelming, but worth the price.

Blueberry crumb pie, regular price $3.50.  Pie of the month slice, $1.75!  This was a running, sloppy mess.  No sweetness in the crumb or the blueberries!  Not impressed!  I will have to try the apple or cherry pie.  But, I'll pass on the blueberries.

Service is good.  The lady who helped me was very nice and helpful.

I would go back to Flo's to have breakfast, many breakfast items look good.

Badminton Cross Court Cafe

Badminton Cross Court Cafe
San Gabriel Valley Badminton Club II
3410 Pomona Blvd
Pomona, CA 91768
909-839-1939

Yes, I'm trying another restaurant that David Allen reviewed!   On Yelp, it's listed as Badminton Cross Court Cafe, but David just lists it as Cross Court Cafe.  Either way, it's located in the San Gabriel Valley Badminton Club, which is across the street from Jinza, which is still open and thriving, having taken over the space that used to be Fresh, a sandwich shop.

Stir fried noodles with shrimp- egg noodles, cabbage, tomatoes, green onion with fried egg.  $6 regular menu price.  $7.73 with shrimp.  There were about six medium sized shrimp.  Good flavor overall.  Maybe a bit underseasoned.  I didn't eat the fried egg, which I think is too over the top.  Portion size could be a bit bigger, but overall a good dish.  One that I enjoyed.

Service is good.  The couple who runs this cafe are very nice.  But limited English makes it tough to order.

This wouldn't be my first choice of places to go to, but I was impressed and would return.
